25 Mar LVNWWDA at the World Water Day 2021 fete

Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) on the 22^nd March 2021 joined the Ministry Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and other water sector players in the country to celebrate this year’s World Water Day at Kibirichia Boys Secondary in Meru County.

The World Water Day is an event held on 22^nd March every year since 1993 to celebrate water and raise awareness of the global water crisis. The core focus of the observance of the day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

This year’s celebration will mark the 28th edition of the World Water Day with the theme being ‘Valuing Water’ which aims to recognize and consider all the benefits provided by water including economic, social and ecological dimensions.

This year’s celebrations was low key following the third wave of the Covid 19 outbreak and the presidential directive on gatherings. Only a few representatives of the Water Sector players and members of the public were allowed into the venue of the event, Kibirichi Boys High School.

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation was represented at the national celebration in by Mr. Kennedy Ondieki. Speaking during the event, Mr. Ondieki decried the destruction of water sources and catchment areas through pollution and cutting of trees. “While 70 percent of the Earth is covered by water,” Ondieki said, “it is still considered a precious resource because only a very small amount is freshwater and an even smaller amount is safe for human use.”

He urged the public to “value water” by protecting water sources and catchment areas in order to help protect the environment and safeguard public health by ensuring the quality and quantity of source water used for human consumption.

To commemorate the day LVNWWDA, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and other water sector institutions who participated in the national event undertook a week long planting of trees at Kibirichia Boys High School, Kibirichia Girls High School and Kibirichia Primary School where over 6000 tree seedling were planted during the period.
