Terem-Nalondo-Chwele Water Supply Project was officially commissioned by the Deputy President H.E. William S. Ruto on the 12th October, 2018 in Mt. Elgon

The Deputy President was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Water and Sanitation Mr. Simon Chelugui, the Bungoma County Governor H.E. Wycliffe Wangamati, Bungoma County Senator Hon. Hon. Moses Wetangula, Board of Directors and CEO of LVNWSB and a host of dignitaries and leaders from the Western region among others.

The Terem – Chwele –Nalondo Water supply was implemented by Lake Victoria North Water Services Board at a cost Kshs.300m with funding from Korean Government through Korea International Cooperation Agency KOICA.

The project was implemented in the area in order to improve the living conditions of the beneficiaries by increasing access to quality and affordable water and sanitation services in the project area. It will produce 2,500m3 of Water per day to serve over 8,000 families of over 50,000 people in the targeted area

The project involved construction of a new water supply system including a water treatment plant with a capacity of 2,000m3/day, a (36km) water supply pipe work, seven (7) water kiosks, and several communal water points at select primary schools in the project’s target area. In order to increase awareness of safe water use and healthy hygiene and sanitation practices, the programme incorporated awareness and sensitization activities which include production and distribution of information, communication and educational materials to schools and the targeted beneficiaries, in addition to undertaking hygiene and sanitation campaigns in the project area of Bungoma County.

The project was designed to be fully gravitational, all the way from the intake to the distribution networks. This means that there will be reduced cost of operation and maintenance since electricity consumption in the supply system will be bare minimum.

Further, KOICA undertook capacity buildings in financial and technical skills required for the management of the water facility, for the Kenyan officials and engineers who will be involved in the implementation and operationalization of the project upon completion. This has ensured that the right technical and management skills are put in place in the management of the completed water supply system for guaranteed sustainability.

While addressing the public during the official commissioning of the project, The DP reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to quality and affordable water to all Kenyans by the year 2030.

The commissioning of the Terem – Chwele –Nalondo Water supply project is yet another great milestone for Lake Victoria North Water Services Board in its efforts to the attainment of its mandate of ensuring provision of adequate, quality and affordable water and sanitation services in its region of coverage.
